AlUla Celebrates World Heritage Day by Highlighting Al-Hijr and the Old Town as Saudi Cultural Icons
AlUla celebrates World Heritage Day by highlighting its historical legacy and ongoing restoration efforts, featuring Al-Hijr and the old town as cultural icons.
AlUla aligns with the International Day for Monuments and Sites (World Heritage Day), observed on April 18 each year, with a rich historical legacy spanning thousands of years, reflecting its deep cultural roots and status as a prominent cultural hub in the Kingdom and the world. This day underscores the importance of cultural heritage as a living witness to the identity and authenticity of peoples.
AlUla is distinguished by its diverse heritage that combines antiquity with cultural multiplicity, having served as a crossroads for trade routes and human civilizations over the centuries. This has resulted in a rich record of archaeological evidence and architectural landmarks documenting the evolution of human life in the region. The governorate is home to numerous heritage sites that embody this historical continuity.
AlUla hosts several sites of global heritage value, foremost among them Al-Hijr, the first Saudi site to be listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, alongside historical sites and villages that embody traditional living patterns, most notably the old town with over 900 contiguous mud-brick houses, reflecting local architectural characteristics and the social dimension of the area.
This day is an international occasion celebrated by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), following its adoption by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1983. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of cultural heritage in the lives and identities of communities, highlighting its diversity and fragility, and the necessity of its protection and preservation.
Monuments and sites, including living landscapes, serve as tangible carriers of the memory of human experience, contributing through their authenticity and integrity to conveying historical values and highlighting cultural testimonies. This heritage takes various forms, including inscriptions, archaeological landmarks, historical sites, architectural structures, and elements associated with local traditions.
AlUla continues its efforts to preserve its heritage sites through specialized restoration and rehabilitation projects, enhancing the sustainability of this legacy and ensuring its transmission to future generations, in line with international objectives to protect human heritage and enhance its global presence.
