Saudi Roads Authority Constructs World's First Road Using Demolition Waste in Al-Ahsa, Expands the Experiment
The Vision 2030 report reveals a transformation in the road sector led by the Roads Authority, creating the world's first road using demolition waste in Al-Ahsa.
The road networks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia form a vital system and an active sector that embraces the latest innovations and advanced technologies, going beyond being mere transportation routes, as they connect all regions of the Kingdom to all cities.
According to the annual report of the "Vision 2030" for the year 2025, the exceptional transformation in the road sector is evident through pioneering initiatives led by the General Authority for Roads, starting from recycling construction waste for road paving to applying advanced engineering techniques in logistics truck routes.
The concept of material recycling stands out as one of the key pillars for achieving environmental sustainability, as the "Roads Authority" successfully employed building demolition waste in asphalt mixtures in Al-Ahsa Governorate, making it the first road in the world to rely on this type of recycled material. This achievement reflects a strategic shift in the road sector towards optimal resource utilization, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.
After proving its technical and environmental feasibility, the authority quickly expanded the application of this technology to include roads in the capital Riyadh and Jeddah Governorate, in a distinctive step to generalize the benefit across the Kingdom, in collaboration with relevant entities managing construction and demolition waste.
This environmental shift is accompanied by unprecedented technical and engineering development, as the "Roads Authority" adopted the use of "compacted concrete" technology for the first time, especially in lanes designated for trucks, contributing to building roads with higher durability and longer lifespan.
This step also achieved significant environmental and economic sustainability, supported by modern structural designs that resist deformations caused by high axial loads, marking another qualitative transformation that enhances the quality and network of roads.
In the context of ensuring the sustainability of road assets and improving their operational efficiency, the authority's efforts in linking innovations to long-term strategic goals stand out, as innovative solutions have proven successful in reducing operational costs and minimizing maintenance needs.
Indicators point to continuous growth that enhances the road sector's ability to achieve the vision's targets, confirming the authority's commitment to adopting global best practices, encouraging an innovative environment, and moving the Kingdom towards establishing its position as a global logistics hub.
