Passenger Seats in Saudi Arabia Near 8 Million in One Month: Kingdom Leads the Region
Saudi Arabia's scheduled flight seat capacity nears 8 million in August 2026, leading the Middle East with a 4.1% increase from last year.
The scheduled seat capacity for flights in Saudi Arabia is approaching the 8 million mark this August, positioning the Kingdom as the leading aviation market in the Middle East in terms of seat capacity, according to the latest data from OAG, an international organization specializing in airline and airport information.
The data reveals that airlines have scheduled approximately 7.86 million seats in the Saudi market during August 2026, marking a 4.1% increase compared to the same month last year, indicating continued strong demand for travel during the peak summer season.
Saudi Arabia Leads the Middle East
The figures highlight the expanding size of the Saudi aviation market, which combines a large network of international flights with active domestic travel connecting the Kingdom's cities and major airports.
According to OAG, Saudi Arabia is the largest aviation market in the Middle East during August 2026 in terms of total scheduled seats, and it was among the few markets in the region to achieve annual growth during the month.
This surge coincides with the summer travel season and increased departure and return traffic, along with demand for domestic flights and the expansion of airline networks operating in the Kingdom.
Jeddah Ranks Second Among Regional Airports
At the airport level, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah recorded approximately 2.69 million scheduled seats in August, ranking second among Middle Eastern airports in terms of capacity, following Dubai International Airport, which recorded about 4.54 million seats.
King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh also recorded around 2.56 million seats during the month, achieving an annual growth of 6.1%, clearly reflecting the ongoing expansion in air traffic to and from the capital.
This brings the total scheduled capacity at Jeddah and Riyadh airports alone to nearly 5.25 million seats in one month.
What Does 'Seat Capacity' Mean?
OAG – Official Aviation Guide is one of the leading international organizations specializing in aviation data, monitoring flight schedules, seat capacity, and airline and airport networks and markets worldwide.
Seat capacity refers to the number of seats offered by airlines according to announced flight schedules during a specific period, not necessarily the actual number of passengers who used these seats.
Thus, the figure of 7.86 million seats reflects the amount of air capacity available in the Saudi market during August, and does not mean that 7.86 million people actually traveled.
Growth Despite Regional Challenges
The Kingdom's lead comes at a time when the aviation sector in the Middle East has experienced changes in capacity due to airlines adjusting their schedules in recent months.
OAG data for July 2026 showed that the total seat capacity for the aviation sector in the Middle East reached approximately 36.3 million seats, with international flights accounting for the majority.
The continued growth of the Saudi market amid these conditions highlights the transformation occurring in the Kingdom's aviation sector, coinciding with airline expansion, increased air connectivity, and airport development, as part of the National Aviation Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030.
With capacity reaching around 7.86 million seats in August alone, the Kingdom has become the largest aviation market in the region during the peak summer travel season, surpassing markets that have long dominated the regional scene.
