Appointment of Commander for Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance

In the framework of completing the foundational procedures for the Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance, the Ministry of Defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announces the appointment of Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri as the commander of the alliance. This follows the previous announcement on July 30, 2026, marking a key step in advancing the institutional framework and enhancing the operational readiness of the alliance.

This appointment reflects the commitment of the founding countries to complete the leadership structure of the alliance, thereby enhancing its readiness to execute its defense missions to support maritime security, protect freedom of navigation, secure maritime passages and straits, and support international trade and global supply chains within the alliance's area of responsibility, in accordance with its charter and international law.

The commander of the alliance will undertake the tasks of joint maritime defense leadership, oversee planning and coordination among member states and with other maritime alliances, and execute joint activities and missions in accordance with the alliance's charter and its reference documents and procedures.

This appointment also contributes to completing the construction of joint leadership and staff structures, enhancing the alliance's readiness to welcome member states and their capabilities, and initiating the implementation of its programs and initiatives, as well as developing cooperation in maritime security, information exchange, capacity building, and joint training and exercises.

The process of more countries joining continues since the announcement of the alliance's establishment, with additional countries having signed the joint statement, while others continue to complete their national procedures to sign the joint statement and the alliance's charter, paving the way for their official membership as founding countries.

The Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance affirms that it is an open international alliance welcoming the accession of all countries that align with its goals and principles, and continues to receive membership applications. An additional statement will be issued detailing the names of countries that have completed the signing procedures, reflecting the expansion of the founding countries' base, enhancing its defensive effectiveness, and establishing a multinational maritime partnership capable of accommodating more countries willing to support maritime security and stability, enhance international cooperation, and address common maritime challenges, serving the shared interests of all participating countries.

The stages of the alliance's establishment continue with a planners' meeting on August 12 and 13, 2026, to complete the institutional building requirements and for more countries to sign the joint statement and charter according to organizational arrangements, paving the way for official membership in the alliance.
